Connecting WordPress to AI coding agents with MCP

What the Model Context Protocol is, why it suits WordPress, and the safeguards I put around an agent that can touch a live site.

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is a standard way for an AI agent to discover and use tools. I built the ConnectDev MCP plugin to give AI coding agents a controlled route into WordPress through a custom Agent Bridge with multi-provider support.

Why WordPress and agents fit together

A typical WordPress site is a mix of themes, plugins and content that an agent cannot understand from the outside. Exposing the right tools lets it read the real structure of a site and propose precise changes instead of guessing.

The safeguards I care about

  • Work on a staging copy first, and promote changes only after review.
  • Scope permissions per task. An agent that writes content does not need file access.
  • Keep a clear record of what the agent changed so any edit can be reviewed or reverted.
  • Treat agent output like a pull request from a new teammate: read it before it goes live.

Where this is going

Automated content and SEO workflows for internal and client sites are already practical. The next step is making those workflows predictable enough that a whole team can rely on them.

  • WordPress
  • MCP
  • AI agents

In short

Give an agent the access it needs, and not one permission more.
